Milk Stuff

An easy way to reduce the fat content in your milk is to start drinking skimmed milk instead of full fat stuff

Here’s a link to the dairy council with lots more info

They have a 3 a day campaign which I think is worth reading about. Also a few comments on calcium rich diets. Remember milk gives you lots of good stuff too so don’t try and cut it out of your diet completely unless you are getting it from other products. Calicum is needed for healthy teeth and bones.

Fairtrade Stuff

Fairtrade guarantees a better deal for third world producers.

Here’s the website fairtrade

It has a great recipes page

However it is NOT low fat as you will tell.

You may be asking why am I printing it here. Well, you can buy the products but you could use them in low fat recipes too. Just use your imagination.

The other reason is as the fairtrade organisation ensures farmers get a fair price for produce, enjoy safe working conditions, education for all, healthcare and adequate housing for themselves and their families. Only an idiot would not think that was well worth publicising!

Check it out!

With walkers you are talking about crisps and snacks so here I am
concentrating on Walker’s lites, they won a slimming world award
for low fat snacks back in 2000

walkers lites

Crisps is one thing you can cut down in your lifestyle, but if you fancy a packet why not try these as a healthier alternative to normal crisps.

Organic Meat Stuff

I found a leaflet when I got home last night from a company selling organic meat.

I try to encourage people to buy organic free range meat as the quality of life for the animals is better.

I don’t expect you to buy from

http://www.ensors.org/

But next time you are putting some meat in your basket, ask yourself where it came from and if possible get the freerange stuff. I know not everyone can afford it so I’ll stop preaching now.

Thought for March 2006

I've had a few emails asking where was my thought for the month so here we go due to popular demand:

Saw a new TV show on Saturday where Nigel Slatter talks to celebs about the food
that they most remember in their lives.

It got me thinking about mine and what dishes mean anything to me.

I suppose it goes back to when I was child and we always had a roast on a Sunday.

All the great combinations

Chicken and stuffing
Pork and Apple sauce
Lamb and mint sauce
Beef and Yorkshire Puddings

During the week

Fish simply cooked
hotpot with potatoes that would soak up the gravy

Desserts such as

Apple Pie and custard.
Crumble and Custard.
Home made cakes.

Then at college

Curries, Thai.
Chinnese food.

What do you notice about the above?

Yes thats right not any Low fat food recipes there!

What I'm trying to get at it what have you eaten recently that you would say in years looking
back, yea that was a great dish? A lot of low fat food stuff just is not good enough.

I cant think of a single one that I would eat if it was my last day on the planet!

But before you give up on your diets or stop watching what you eat, remember moderation is the key.

Why not be very good during the week and at weekends treat yourself to something you always considered to be a favourite. Not only will it make you feel better but if it's a treat you will appreciate it more.

Fit and Healthy

There are no short cuts to getting fit and healthy, but it’s probably easier than you think.

Eat a variety of different foods
Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables
Eat plenty of foods rich in starch and fibre
Eat the right amount to be a healthy weight
Don’t eat too many foods that contain a lot of fat
Don’t have sugary foods and drinks too often
If you drink alcohol, drink sensibly.

Regular exercise not only makes you feel energetic, it will help you improve muscle tone and body shape, control blood pressure and reduce stress levels. Exercise boosts your metabolic rate, meaning that the food you eat is utilised more efficiently which can help you to lose weight. And you don’t need to become an exercise fanatic. Simply start building more movement into your daily routine.A minimum of 30 minutes moderate physical activity at least five times a week is important and 60 minutes is best for a healthy lifestyle. Everyday activities such as walking, gardening and even house cleaning contribute to daily activity and burn off calories.

Don’t fall victim to the snack attack. It is important not to skip meals. By sticking to meal times snacking should be less tempting. Plan snacks at regular intervals throughout the day – mid-morning and mid-afternoon. If you allow yourself to get hungry, you’re more likely to end up grabbing an unhealthy snack or overeating at your next meal.

Plan ahead and make sure your fridge and cupboards are stocked with plenty of healthier snacks, such as dried fruits, low fat yoghurt, wholemeal bread.#

Don’t use snacks as a substitute for proper meals.

Plan regular snacks at set times rather than constantly grazing throughout the day.
Avoid eating heavy carbohydrate-rich lunches. Aim for a balance of carbohydrate and protein – a bowl of soup or a wholemeal sandwich are ideal choices.

Drink a large glass of water before you start eating. It will help fill your stomach and reduce the risk of overeating and also prevent you from becoming dehydrated in the afternoon. Even mild dehydration is enough to make you feel tired and lethargic.

Avoid drinking alcohol at lunchtime.

Try to make time to get up from your desk at lunchtime and if possible get a breath of fresh air.

Simple things to change your lifestyle for the better!
