type='text'>About Us

A few months ago I wanted to find a list of the best low fat products on the market.

I wanted to watch what I was eating but not give up my favourite stuff. You love to eat sweet stuff so is there a low fat alternative that does not taste rubbish on the market.

Why should you have to give up the things you love just because you are watching your weight?

Any way I searched and searched for a list, but to no avail. The Internet had failed me! That’s where I got the idea for this blog from, but as I loved everything to do with cooking I thought I should expand this idea to cover a lot more areas. The latest healthy cookery books, best recipes, diet information and great gadgets people will use and not end up at the back of the kitchen draw!

Infact there should be something to interest not just the people who are interested in keeping their weight in check but those lucky people who can get away with eating anything! Food is not just about watching what you eat. You want to enjoy life.

That’s why I want your recipes and diet tips too share with everyone. Most people in their lifetime will want to lose some weight so lets give them the information they need to make it easy. The better a resource this blog becomes for people like you and me. The more helpful it will be.

I want you too to tell me the low fat food products you love and I will list those too. I want you to feel this is your blog too!

I hope you find it useful.

Slim Fast Stuff

Heres a link to their website

slimfast.co.uk

According to the site:

People choose the Slim.Fast plan because it works - it's easy, it's tasty and it doesn't mean giving up all your favourite snacks. You simply choose a Slim Fast meal for breakfast and lunch and prepare your own healthy evening meal, up to 600 calories. And to help maintain your energy levels you can snack up to 3 times a day. It's also a good idea to make sure you drink around 2 litres of water as a lack of water can make you dehydrated, which can leave you feeling hungry.

The Slim Fast plan has been developed by a team of nutritionists and chefs to really help you with your weight loss goals. All Slim Fast meals are delicious and each one contains 1/3 of all the nutrition you need for healthy weight loss, so if you follow the plan you'll get 100% of the nutrition you need each day.

Slim Fast is proven to work, with clinical evidence showing that people using Slim Fast lose more weight and keep it off for longer than with a conventional calorie controlled diet.

Check out the site for more information.
Thought for April

Its that time again for me to go on about stuff.

Cooking someone a meal is one of the ways you can really show someone you care. I mean for most of us preparing a meal for someone we love is saying I love you but without the words.

Cooking someone a meal but trying to make it healthy does them even more good. The problem for some people is getting their partners to change their eating habits too. All I can say is keep trying. There is no easy way just keep on trying! BUT do not let it affect what you eat, they might not want to help themselves but you need to look after yourself too.

Also Remember say no to chocolate Easter eggs, why not get egg decorating kits this year for the kids if you cant resist them.

Milk Stuff

An easy way to reduce the fat content in your milk is to start drinking skimmed milk instead of full fat stuff

Here’s a link to the dairy council with lots more info

They have a 3 a day campaign which I think is worth reading about. A lot of low fat food stuff just is not good enough.

I cant think of a single one that I would eat if it was my last day on the planet!

But before you give up on your diets or stop watching what you eat, remember moderation is the key.

Why not be very good during the week and at weekends treat yourself to something you always considered to be a favourite. Exercise boosts your metabolic rate, meaning that the food you eat is utilised more efficiently which can help you to lose weight. And you don’t need to become an exercise fanatic. Simply start building more movement into your daily routine.A minimum of 30 minutes moderate physical activity at least five times a week is important and 60 minutes is best for a healthy lifestyle. Everyday activities such as walking, gardening and even house cleaning contribute to daily activity and burn off calories.

Don’t fall victim to the snack attack. It is important not to skip meals. By sticking to meal times snacking should be less tempting. Plan snacks at regular intervals throughout the day – mid-morning and mid-afternoon. If you allow yourself to get hungry, you’re more likely to end up grabbing an unhealthy snack or overeating at your next meal.

Plan ahead and make sure your fridge and cupboards are stocked with plenty of healthier snacks, such as dried fruits, low fat yoghurt, wholemeal bread.#

Don’t use snacks as a substitute for proper meals.

Plan regular snacks at set times rather than constantly grazing throughout the day.
Avoid eating heavy carbohydrate-rich lunches. Aim for a balance of carbohydrate and protein – a bowl of soup or a wholemeal sandwich are ideal choices.

Drink a large glass of water before you start eating. It will help fill your stomach and reduce the risk of overeating and also prevent you from becoming dehydrated in the afternoon. Even mild dehydration is enough to make you feel tired and lethargic.

Avoid drinking alcohol at lunchtime.

Try to make time to get up from your desk at lunchtime and if possible get a breath of fresh air.

Simple things to change your lifestyle for the better!

Ryvitas Stuff

Here's a link to the Ryvita website.

Its got lots of info on all their great products. I really hate this day. It would definitely be on my list for room 101.

I hate companies trying to exploit us with their cards and stuff. Putting pressure on people who haven’t got a partner to find one and pressure on people in relationships to give them a present.

If you have someone show them you love them during the whole of the year not just one day.

If you haven’t got a partner and you feel miserable, why not indulge in some low fat ice cream like skinny cow.

If you have got a partner and feel miserable then why are you with them?

Like with all aspects of life, ask yourself are you happy? If your not then change something about your life, if that doesn’t work change something else.

Time to get off my soap box an back looking for great low fat food products!

V8 Stuff

These products are a great way to easily get your 5 a day portions of fruit and vegetables.

Basically they are fruit drinks which have carrot juice added to them. This will fill you up more then quickly swallowing your food
3) Choose a salad or soup as a Starter, this will cut what you eat for your main course
4) Intersperse every Alcoholic drink with water. It will slow down the rate you absorb alcohol and help digest your food.
5) Avoid pastry food at buffets
6) Avoid food in a breadcrumb coating or that looks crispy. It will usual be high in fat.
7) Shiny food like peanuts should be avoided as they probably contain oil
8) Just because the company is paying don’t get your money’s worth remember the big picture.
9) If having wine finish your glass before filling it up again. Don’t let people keep on topping you up. So you know how much you have drank. Remember Calories are in every glass.
10) Dance a lot. Dancing Burns 420 Cals per hour, also if you are dancing you are not eating or drinking.

A Christmas Thought for Turkeys

As it’s the Christmas season and we get ready to celebrate with friends and families on the big day. Don’t’ forget Christmas is for Turkeys too, so why not try a free-range bird this year?

This blog is about food, but sometimes we forget about how that food arrives on out plate in the first place.

Like most people in the world I too have to budget, but why can’t you save money in other ways and stop buying mass-produced food from animals that have been treated inhumanly. We all know about battery hens, ducks that have never been for a swim and pigs kept indoors in confined spaces. I Think we juist chose to ignore it when we buy meat.

I'm a meat eater, I'm not proud of the fact, but its true. As I have pets, I treat them with respect and I want my food to have had as good a life as possible.

The question is what can we do to make this happen?

Well for a start, buy more organic and free range produce. Look out for free range pork, chicken, and turkeys. Find that extra money you spend somewhere else in your budget. Only when we buy free range goods will supermarkets demand that their producers to do it that way.

Years ago when organic produce first hit the shops the supermarkets only stocked a few items. Only ‘buyer power’ can change the way we eat. Its starting to happen but there is a long way to go.

Spend a little more on the quality of animal produce and a little less on other goods.

Everyone including animals deserve respect in life as well as death.

J

The GI Diet

The Glycemic Index (also glycaemic index, GI) is a ranking system for carbohydrates based on their immediate effect on blood glucose levels. It compares carbohydrates gram for gram in individual foods, providing a numerical, evidence-based index of post-meal glycemia.

The theory behind diets based on the Glycaemic Index is that foods with a low GI value slowly release sugar into the blood, providing you with a steady supply of energy, leaving you feeling satisfied longer so that you're less likely to snack. In contrast, foods with a high GI value cause a rapid - but short-lived - rise in blood sugar. This leaves you lacking in energy and feeling hungry within a short time, with the result that you end up reaching for a snack. If this pattern is frequently repeated, you're likely to gain weight as a result of constantly overeating.

Diets based on GI index simply encourage you to eat plenty of foods with a low GI value and avoid those with a high GI value. This helps to prevent swings in blood sugar, helping you feel fuller for longer. However, most GI diets also recommend cutting down on fat, especially saturates. This means many of the foods which have a low GI value but are high in fat - whole milk, crisps and chocolate, for example - are still limited.

What are the benefits of a GI Diet?

Feel fuller for longer.
Reduce food cravings.
Reduce snacking.
Help control your weight.

AlsoTesco is now starting to label selected foods with their GI rating. Look out for the big blue circles in store on selected low and medium GI foods.

Here are some useful links so you can read up more on the GI diet the weightlossresources is very good and the Times one shows some great recipes and gives a good review.

Like with all diets, see your GP to find out if this kind of diet is right for you.

How to survive all you can eat restaurants

Last week I went with my partner to a Chinese all you can eat restaurant

I was shocked by the size of portions some of the people were eating there.

They just went back and back for more because it was free and they wanted
to get their moneys worth, not because they were hungry any more.

So I thought it might be a good idea to give a few tips on how to handle these places.
Especially the Chinese ones. So here are some tips:

Eat with chopsticks; they will slow you down, give you more time to feel full and ultimately keep you from overeating.

For your first course have soup (hot and sour is good), you will try something new and it will fill you up for little calories.

Then give the prawn toasts a miss and go for your main course. Only have one plate, so fill it up with different dishes, have a large amount of boiled steamed rice not fried (It will fill you up) then concentrate on the meat/fish dishes, beef in blackbean and oyster dishes are good.

Plum, hoisin and duck sauces are also excellent choices since they're fat-free. Just don't go overboard on the amount you use because these sauces are quite high in sugar.

If you do go for a sweet and sour dish make sure the chicken is plain and not covered in batter.

If you want treat yourself to a dessert; again just remember one portion. Try and have fruit instead of banana fritters. I know how difficult that sounds!

The secret is self-control, savour the food, not try and just get you money’s worth. Sometimes it’s better to have quality then quantity.

Low-fat crisps

This week I'm trying low fat crisps, here are the ones tried. Not tasty and way to many I got really bored of them quickly. * (because of the low fat content not because of taste)

Of course the best way would be to give up crisps entirely and have some fruit instead.

Parma Chicken Kiev’s

Parma Chicken Kiev’s (serves 4)

Ingredients:

4 oz quark
2 garlic cloves
3 tbsp. of finely chopped parsley
½ finely chopped basil
Black pepper
4 chicken breasts (no skin)
4 slices of Parma ham
Fry light

How to do it:

Mix the quark, garlic basil and parsley, make a pocket in each breast with a slit and fill with the quark mixture wrap with Parma ham, spray with frylight and cook from 20 mins at gas 7 or 220 C Or until the chicken is cooked.

The secret here is using quark, a really great low fat cream cheese, fantastic stuff and very versatile in deserts as well as main meals.

Thought for December

Support is the key

Why is it that some people are supported by friends and partners when they embark on a diet and others aren’t?

I think it’s difficult enough to go on a diet, but to not get the support of your nearest and dearest makes it twice as hard. The question is why do they not support you?

Maybe they love you the way you are you might not need to lose weight. Or maybe they see it as a change to the way they will have too eat. Maybe they think you are trying to make yourself more attractive to the opposite sex and that doesn’t include themselves. You are not happy with your life whilst they are.You need to ask them why?

A lot of people join a slimming group and that’s all the support they need, but if you are giving up smoking and your partner keeps on blowing smoke on your face it wont help and its just the same if they are stuffing their faces infront of you. I know someone who when trying to diet, their partner decided to go to a well-known fried chicken fast food joint for dinner. They knew they would give in.

Now before you think I'm only coming form one side. I want you, the dieter, to know that you should remember that your partner my like full fat food, where as they can have it and you cant. Both parties need to work together; after all sharing a meal together is one of the great couple things to do.

I hate being the only one eating a burger so check out a recipe for low fat burgers. Just because you are dieting does not mean you too can't enjoy fast food, check out Chinese and Indian low fat dishes. If you find a great lowfat dish, involve them ask then to try it. Support works in two directions, give and take.

Diet Tips

I’ve looked at loads of diet web-sites and all their tips seem to be the same. They all make sense too. So I’ve put together a list of the 20 of the most common and the most useful. Making small changes in your eating habits can help you dramatically.

20 Diet tips

1) Three meals a day (don’t skip breakfast).
2) Eat fruit between meals as healthy snacks instead of crisps.
3) Drink more water (if cold body use calories to heat water up).
4) Treat yourself at the weekend.
5) Keep a diet diary if still putting on load of weight, make a note of what you eat.
6) Join a slimming group if you need support.
7) Switch from sugar to sweetener.
8) Switch from half-fat to skimmed milk.
9) Switch to low fat fizzy drinks.
10) Exercise at least twice during the week.
11) Set yourself realistic targets.
12) If drinking have spirit with low calorie mixer (gin and tonic only 55 cals).
13) Cut down on caffeine.
14) If having Chinese then have plain boiled rice not special fried.
15) If you give into temptation then start again tomorrow don’t give up!
16) Don’t have Nan bread and rice with your curry.
17) Get into the habit of not having biscuits or cakes unless it’s a special occasion and then only have one.
18) Go for a walk at weekend or during lunch hours.
19) Include more vegetables.
20) Give up pastry.

Remember low fat food can taste great. So experiment with recipes and if you find ones you like then stick with them. You are bound to try ones you don’t like just try another instead.

The Atkins Diet

Dr. Atkins revolutionalized the dieting world when he introduced the Atkins diet, it is a low-carb eating program.

The diet claims that you can lose weight on a high-fat, high-protein diet. It works on the premise that a healthy lifestyle requires a limited amount of simple carbohydrates, protein, exercise and proper portion control.

However the idea of giving up bread, chips and rice does not appeal to some of us.

The diet plan works on 4 general principles; weight loss, weight maintenance, good health and disease prevention. Today, the Atkins diet is the most popular, longstanding approach to weight loss in America. One of the reasons for this is the results people get in only a few weeks.

So it basicly says cut out the carbs ,no more than 20g a day and if you do this, you burn off your stored fat. However you need to drink a lot of water because it is hard on your kidneys.

Here is a Sample Menu:
Breakfast Scrambled eggs and bacon, decaf coffee or tea.
Lunch A Bacon cheeseburger, but no bun, no fries, with a salad.
Dinner steak, salad with dressing.

The Atkins Diet For:

Allowed to eat fat and protein.
Steady (and sometimes rapid) weight loss.
Reduces intake of sugars and processed grains.
Reduces appetite.
Life-time approach to dieting.
A ‘never be hungry’ approach to dieting.

The Atkins Diet: Against

Not ideal for vegetarians or vegans as it is a meat-heavy diet.
Linked to diseases such as osteoporosis and heart disease.
High in saturated fats and cholesterol.
Low in fibre.
Sometimes below the recommended daily values for several vitamins and minerals.

Like with all diets see your doctor before you start some diets are not suitable for everyone. Remember it might not be for you but there are a lot more out there.
